I have been waiting this release with great anticipation and it has eventually been done! Prototype 1.6 is out and it’s hot, fully packed with new features and pretty advanced OO magic!
Along with prototype comes the latest version of its effects lib companion. Script.aculo.us 1.8.0. This latest version runs a lot faster by utilizing the prototype 1.6 performance enhancements and adds some new effects. Most impressive is the new Sounds effects that allow the playback of sounds on demand!
What excites me most though is not the actual Prototype library but the announcement of prototype-ui (www.prototype-ui.com). This has just started as a user interface library along with a few ready to use UI elements based on prototype. The project is currently at very early stages but it feels promising to me. It is good news to have descent rivals against the ExtJs (www.extjs.com) which is at the moment a lot more advanced and complete than anything else I have seen.
I think that JavaScript has become very serious now and there is a new era of client side scripting emerging from these JavaScript libraries. I am enjoying it to the full!
